ARESTIN Therapy

A localized antibiotic that goes exactly where it's needed — placed gently into a gum pocket during your deep cleaning.

ARESTIN is a tiny dose of antibiotic powder (minocycline) that is placed directly into a gum pocket after a deep cleaning. Once it is in place, it slowly releases over several days, helping fight the bacteria that cause periodontal disease.

At Scottsville Family Dentistry, Dr. Azevedo or Dr. Lee may recommend ARESTIN if your gum pockets are deeper than a standard cleaning can fully resolve. It is not for everyone — but for the right patient, it makes a meaningful difference in how well the gums heal.

The placement itself is quick and painless. You may be asked to skip flossing in the treated area for about ten days while the medicine does its work. Most patients see noticeably better pocket depths at their follow-up visit.

Why it matters

  • Targets bacteria where they actually live — deep in the gum pocket
  • Works alongside a deep cleaning to improve healing
  • Slow-release — keeps working for about ten days after placement
  • May reduce the need for more aggressive gum treatment

Questions we hear

Does ARESTIN hurt?+
No. The powder is placed gently into the pocket using a small applicator. Most patients do not feel it at all. You will not need numbing for this part of your visit.
How soon will it work?+
ARESTIN releases over about ten days. We usually check pocket depths at your next maintenance visit to see how well the area has healed. Most patients see real improvement.
Are there any side effects?+
Side effects are rare. Some patients experience mild gum soreness for a day or two. Let us know if you have a tetracycline allergy — that is the one situation where ARESTIN is not appropriate.
