Restore Your Smile

Denture Exams & Maintenance

Even after every tooth is replaced, the mouth keeps changing. Yearly denture exams catch fit issues early and check the tissues that aren't visible at home.

Many people assume once they have dentures, they don't need a dentist anymore. That's one of the most common — and most expensive — misunderstandings we see. Bone naturally resorbs after teeth are lost, gums change shape, and dentures that fit perfectly two years ago can start to slip, rub, or accelerate further bone loss if they're not adjusted.

At your annual maintenance visit in Scottsville, we check the fit, look for sore spots and ulcers, screen the soft tissues for anything concerning (including oral cancer), and professionally clean the dentures. If a reline is needed, we plan that visit; if the dentures have reached the end of their life, we talk through replacement options.

Patients with implant-supported dentures get a slightly different protocol — checking the implant attachments, the gum health around the implants, and the wear on the snap-in components.

Why it matters

  • Catch fit issues before they cause sore spots or accelerate bone loss
  • Oral cancer screening of soft tissues that home care can't see
  • Professional cleaning to remove buildup you can't reach
  • Honest reline vs. remake recommendations — no upselling

Questions we hear

How often should I have my dentures checked?+
Once a year is the standard recommendation, even if everything feels fine. Sooner if anything changes — looseness, soreness, a clicking sound, or food trapping under the denture.
What's a reline and why might I need one?+
A reline refits the inside surface of your denture to match the current shape of your gums. As bone resorbs, the original fit loosens. Relines are quicker and cheaper than a new denture and usually buy you another few years.
How long do dentures usually last?+
With good care and regular maintenance, full dentures typically last 5-10 years before they need to be replaced. Partials often last a bit longer. Yearly exams help you get the full lifespan.
