Prophylaxis

A professional cleaning — the regular polish, scale, and check that your hygienist performs at your routine visits.

Prophylaxis is the clinical name for a standard professional cleaning. Your hygienist gently removes the plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing cannot reach, polishes your teeth, and checks the health of your gums.

At Scottsville Family Dentistry, your cleaning is a calm, unhurried appointment. We use modern ultrasonic scalers when appropriate and traditional hand instruments when they are gentler. Dr. Azevedo or Dr. Lee then does a brief exam to make sure nothing else needs attention.

Most people are due for a prophylaxis every six months. If your gums are very healthy you may go longer; if there has been a history of gum issues, you may need a different type of cleaning. Either way, we will tell you clearly what is right for you.

Why it matters

  • Removes plaque and tartar that home care simply cannot reach
  • Helps prevent cavities and gum disease before they take hold
  • Polishes away coffee, tea, and surface stains
  • Gives your dentist a chance to spot small issues early

Questions we hear

Will a cleaning hurt?+
For most patients, no. If your gums are sensitive or it has been a while since your last cleaning, parts of it may feel tender. Tell your hygienist — they can adjust their approach.
How long does a cleaning take?+
Most cleanings take 30 to 45 minutes. If you are a new patient or have not been seen in a while, we may schedule a bit more time so we are not rushed.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?+
A prophylaxis is for healthy gums. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is for gums that have signs of periodontal disease and need more thorough work below the gum line. We will explain clearly if you need the deeper version.
